Create New Folder greyed out in SharePoint 2010

We are always very accustomed to SharePoint lists and libraries. We always want our documents as well as items or articles to be organized in proper manner so that we can navigate very easily. That path should have proper naming conventions as well as resides in proper folders. Folders are present in list as well as libraries so if you come across a situation in which the ‘create new folder’ option is greyed out then here are the complete steps by which you can get it back.

--Open the list on which you are working on it
--Settings
--List settings
--Advanced settings
-- Select Yes to “Make “New Folder” command available?”
--Make it Yes and that’s it-You are done

If you have any queries/questions regarding the above mentioned information then please let me know. I would be more than happy to help you as well as resolves your issues J Thank you J

  1. Hello,

I've followed the above steps however the folder command is still greyed out. Other document libraries are able to create new folders within them except for this one.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks

  2. Jake,

    - Open that document library in which you are not getting 'new folder' option

    - on that same page-> Right hand side-top corner->edit page

    - modify that document library webpart

    - go to the last section in which you need check the option of "Full Tool Bar"

    - Make that option yes and that's it.

Please check and let me know in case of any queries/questions, Thank you.

  3. Thanks Amol, I've checked the settings and option is already set to Full Tool Bar. The icon is visible but disabled which is strange

    1. Jake,

make sure that the page on which the document library web part is present does not two web parts with the same category.

if the above one is confirmed and still we are not getting that option then lets close the webpart and get it add again.

when you do edit page and modify webpart then you will get the option of 'close', afterwards add a webpart from webpart gallery (section name: list and libraries)

please check and let me know in case of any queries, Thank you.

  4. Try to re-create the document library web part and it may resolve your problem.

  5. In my case it was the View Settings that caused the issue.

I had several different views and only one caused the new folder button to be greyed out.

If you modify the view, scroll down the "Folders" section, and under the Folders or Flat option, choose "Show all items inside folders". Voila, New Folder button is enabled.

  6. Do you guys have any idea how to enable folders in a discussion board? I have fixed libraries and other lists but can't seem to figure it out in a discussion board.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. Basically each new discussion is a folder in itself... you can create additional content types to have the folder option enabled but m not sure if it will work correctly as per you expectations.. but if your requirement is just about sorting or filtering the topics... you can always create another custom column.. just like a tagging column and you can either auto populate using a event receiver or you can give it as a choice column (required) with the topic values... so user can choose whats the topic section when creating a new discussion... and then on your list view you can filter the view on this column... see if that helps...
